Scientifically classified as Pouteria campechiana, Canistel belongs to the Sapotaceae family and is native to southern Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. The fruit is oval-shaped, with a smooth, yellow-orange skin and firm, creamy flesh that resembles the texture of a hard-boiled egg, hence its colloquial name “Eggfruit.” When ripe, Canistel fruit offers a sweet, custard-like flavour with hints of pumpkin and sweet potato, making it a delicious and unique treat.
