The Magic Bean Tree (Castanospermum australe), also called the Black Bean or Moreton Bay Chestnut, is a beautiful Australian native with glossy green leaves and bright orange-red flowers. These flowers appear in spring and are followed by large, bean-like pods that add to its tropical look. It grows well in rich, well-drained soil and likes full sun to part shade.

It can tolerate light frost and filtered light, making it suitable for outdoor gardens or indoor pots when young. Although slow to start, it can grow 6–10 m tall in gardens and develops a strong root system, so it’s best planted away from buildings or pipes. This eye-catching tree makes a great ornamental feature in larger gardens, parks, or as a statement plant indoors.
