Petrea Volubilis, commonly known as Purple Wreath or Sandpaper Vine, is a stunning evergreen climber celebrated for its long, cascading clusters of vibrant purple flowers. These star-shaped blossoms form showy, grape-like sprays that can reach up to 30 cm in length, creating a striking visual display from late spring through summer. The vine’s rough, sandpaper-like leaves provide an interesting textural contrast to the delicate flowers.
This vigorous climber can grow up to 12 m in length, making it perfect for covering pergolas, trellises, fences, or even large walls. Purple Wreath thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering during dry periods will encourage more abundant flowering. Pruning after the flowering season helps maintain its shape and promotes new growth. Petrea Volubilis is an excellent choice for adding a tropical flair and a burst of colour to your garden.
